Swiss Perc
Swiss Perc is an American glass studio founded in 2007 by Nate Dizzle in Seattle, Washington. The name refers to both the brand and its defining percolator design: a chamber punctuated with large circular holes resembling Swiss cheese. Developed from Dizzle's experiments in the 2000s, the Swiss Perc represented a rethinking of percolation by making the chamber itself the filtration system. The design caught attention from collectors and glassblowers for its originality and smooth, low-drag performance.
Swiss Perc Studios became a hub for innovation, attracting artists like Voorhees, JD Maplesden, and Dosher, who collaborated during the studio's peak years from 2009 to 2012. The brand's tubes and bubblers featured sculptural precision, with each piece handcrafted to form symmetrical Swiss holes without compromising structural integrity. As trends shifted toward smaller rigs in the 2010s, Dizzle focused on education and community, founding 7 Point Studios and The Boro School while continuing to promote functional glass through events like Pipe Masters Flame-Off.
In 2020, Dizzle revived Swiss Perc Studios in Raleigh, North Carolina, alongside partners A. West and Chip G., combining scientific glassblowing with the brand's artistic foundation. Production remains small-batch, with each piece signed and released through select retailers. The modern lineup includes straight tubes, mini rigs, and recyclers, all centered on the signature perforated chamber.
The Swiss Perc offers strong filtration with minimal resistance. Smoke and water weave through the chamber holes, creating mixing and cooling without restricting airflow. This produces a distinct pull that has become synonymous with the design. Later variants introduced hybrid models like Swiss Recyclers and collaborations integrating Swiss chambers with other percs, extending the design's versatility while maintaining its clean aesthetic.
Swiss Perc pieces are crafted from clear or lightly fumed borosilicate, allowing viewers to see smoke and water moving through the holes. Some editions include gold or silver fume fades, UV-reactive accents, and sandblasted logos, but the focus remains on the functional form. Each authentic Swiss Perc bears Dizzle's signature or the studio's etched emblem.
Within the collector community, Swiss Perc holds status as one of the defining functional designs of modern glass. Its influence appears in countless interpretations and inspired works, including the Mothership Fab Egg, which evolved from Dizzle's original concept. Through its combination of design, physics, and precision craftsmanship, Swiss Perc remains a benchmark of glass innovation.
